The focus of Kilauea Volcano’s current Leilani Estates Flow on the Big Island of Hawaii near Pahoa has shifted outside the subdivisions to Kapoho and the Pohoiki/Hot Pond area. Pele is sending an enormous amount of lava down a remarkably wide flow, and pouring hot rock into the Noni Farms Road area above Kapoho.

Pele’s hot rock consuming dozens of homes and other structures in her path. She covered part of the Puna Geothermal Ventures plant just east of the subdivision, covering at least one well.

Huge eruptions are happening at fissures below Leilani Estates! Two gigantic pahoehoe outbreaks are emanating from Fissures 16 and 17, and a towering high fountain eruption is blasting skyward at Fissure 17. The lava is spreading in various directions, but hasn’t gone too far yet.

The worst vog we’ve ever experienced blanketed all of East Hawaii today, making our overflight very difficult. We did manage a couple glimpses of fissure 17, as it continues to push hot liquid rock toward the Pacific Ocean. She made little progress overnight, but is now nearly half way to the water. And new fissures continue to pour lava into Lani Puna Gardens… just southeast of the PGV Geothermal plant.

The spattering/exploding event at fissure 17 continues… pushing the hot liquid rock another two-tenths of a mile toward the Pacific Ocean overnight. She is now nearly half way to the water. And two new fissures, numbers 19 and 20, have apparently broken out in Lani Puna Gardens… just southeast of the PGV Geothermal plant.

Pu’u ‘O’o’s lava has reached the flow field… her lava is hotter and more fluid, creating more fountaining and a one mile long a’a flow overnight. Pele is heading to the Pacific Ocean… only about a mile and a half away.

Volcanic activity had slowed this morning in the Leilani Estates subdivision on the Big Island of Hawaii. But this afternoon a little after three, we received reports that the lava had entered the geothermal property (unconfirmed), the Lani Puna Gardens subdivision (both to the east of Leilani Estates), and another fissure had broken out on highway 130, southeast of Leilani.

The thirteenth Leilani Eruption occurred today near the intersection of Leilani Ave and Kahukai. Noxious gas release… huge cracks in the road… and violent lava spattering, as has been typical of the past several days.

The Leilani Estates Subdivision on the East side of the Big Island (Puna) is literally being ripped apart. This morning’s fissure eruption was by far the largest we’ve seen so far… starting just above Luana St, she crossed Leilani Ave, and poured lava into a group of homes to the North.
