“VolcanoScapes… Pele’s March to the Pacific!” (1985-86)
&
“VolcanoScapes II… Kilauea Volcano Rages On!” (1985-89)

This is our only existing material of Kilauea’s high-fountaining eruptions.

Included in “VolcanoScapes (largely aerials) are high-fountain eruptions from 1985-86, fissure eruptions, formation of Kupaianaha (lava lake), the volcano’s advance into Kalapana in late 1986, the destruction of the Kapa`ahu area and the first ocean entry in thirteen years.

“VolcanoScapes II” has a recap of the high-fountain eruptions with the shots cut slightly longer and more ground level shots, particularly at the ocean entry. These are edited documentary programs. They are available on Beta SP, DVCAM and can be upconverted to HDCAM.

VolcanoScapes 3… Living on the Edge!”
&
VolcanoScapes Four… Kilauea’s Flow to Kamoamoa!”

“VolcanoScapes 3” is an edited documentary of Kilauea’s path of destruction through the village of Kalapana on the Puna coastline in 1990.

It recaps the events leading up to the devastation and walks the viewer through the remarkable two months of agony experienced by the residents of the Kalapana area, as the volcano slowly engulfed their community, bit by bit. Houses burn, trees are torched, roads overrun, abandoned cars consumed… everything that isn’t moved is covered or incinerated or both.

Interviews with the residents are interspersed with natural sounds. Naturally, music and narration have been removed for stock footage purposes. There is no more comprehensive videotaped account of the destruction of Kalapana in 1990 than “VolcanoScapes 3.”

“VolcanoScapes Four” is largely shot from ground level, has some ground level spatter cone activity that is very nice, and also a lot of lava close ups of flows that are excellent.  Once again, these are edited programs that are available on Beta SP, DVCAM and can be upconverted to HDCAM.

“VolcanoScapes V… Hawaii Volcanoes National Park”

“VolcanoScapes V” is the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you are looking for anything the national park has to offer, from lava flows to petroglyphs, from native birds to lava tubes, you’ll find it here in “VolcanoScapes V!” We didn’t skim the surface with this one, we put everything in it that the park service people dreamed of having in a program THEY would have produced themselves…

geology, biology, history… tropical rainforests, kahiko hula, USGS scientists sampling two-thousand degree liquid lava from a tube as it makes its way to the Pacific Ocean. You name it, we’ve got it ALL from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! Available on Beta SP, DVCAM and can be upconverted to HDCAM.

Raw Reels

“1997 Highlights”

A classic Hawaiian spatter cone from both the air and the ground, lava into the trees, flows from the ground (nite and day), pretty ocean entry, flow over cliff very heavy flow from above ground level, lava lakes, lava tubes (air and ground), river in pu`u `o`o (air and ground). All this material is available on Beta SP, DVCAM or upconverted to HDCAM.

“Littoral Explosions”

This is undoubtedly our most amazing reel. There are many explosions here, both close-up, medium and wide shots at various f-stops.  Fabulously dramatic, and wonderful quality images for Beta SP.  This is some of the best stuff I have in my opinion. Although all happening near the ocean, these steam explosions do not reveal the ocean itself. They are happening about 20-30 yards from the water. We were standing about 150 feet from the explosions and they were exploding about 150 feet into the air and occasionally landing next to us. It was really quite thrilling. Anyway, give this a good look… I think you’ll find some wonderful stuff here. This is followed by more ocean entry material showing giant steam clouds in the early morning light, a huge pahoehoe flow entering the ocean with the waves occasionally lapping up over the flow itself… aerials of a 2-mile long flow upslope shot through an evening rain shower… incredible steam explosions at the same location as the steam explosions earlier on the reel. This was shot less than a month later, when the lava had apparently drained out of the tube and only steam was left inside to be jetted out. The result was a more-or-less constant steam jetting that went on for about twenty minutes or more. It was very loud, and sounded like a jet engine. The last thing on the screener is a very long series of littoral explosions that we captured more in the nighttime than those earlier. Activity was quite vigorous. All this material is available on Beta SP, DVCAM or upconverted to HDCAM.
