June 30, 2018 Another Kapoho Home Lost
Pele has destroyed yet another home north of the Kapoho Beach Lots. By our count, this brings the total lost in the area to a half dozen over the past several days. She is now still advancing toward the Alahanui Hot Pond and Kua O Ka La Charter School…. but is even more active in the Kapoho Bay area. The source of the eruption upslope is, of course Fissure 8. Fountaining has become gushing, as tons of hot liquid rock pour unabated out of the nearly 200-foot high cone. The output is mind blowing… as Pele continues to generate ten cubic meters of lava per second from this vent. She sends her 2-thousand degree fluid lava downslope in rivers… to the ocean entry some eight miles below. The river is widening here and there, but showing few signs of overflowing. Fissure 22 is also active, spattering, and send out a few flows to the east… but the activity there pales in comparison to Fissure 8. The flow front is now about two miles across. Only a few homes are left to the north… and the slowly moving lava continues picking them off, one by one. Earlier this month, hundreds of homes were destroyed in Kapoho Beach lots and Vacationland to the south. Pilot Sean Regehr once again flew our lava overflight to perfection. Special Return Guest Leslie Gleim, Leilani, Bowler Ducky, Bruce Omori and I still cannot believe the amount of lava produced by this phenomenal eruption centered in Leilani Estates! Mahalo, Sean… and as always, king-size mahalos to Paradise Helicopters for making this all possible!
