April Buxton evacuated to the parking lot adjacent to the Red Cross shelter in Pahoa, Hawaii. She was one of the first to set up camp there and set up a community pantry and kitchen.

On June 13, 2018, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported: “Krislyn Yano, communications manager for the American Red Cross of Hawaii, said the Pahoa shelter is not at capacity, so anyone camping outdoors there is doing so by choice. She also said the agency has been accepting anyone seeking help, regardless of their circumstances.”

Buxton countered that statement and said that because no one is being turned away, criminals have infiltrated the parking lot area and have stolen from vulnerable evacuees. She also claimed that because of their alleged “choice” to set up camp in the parking lot, they are not receiving aid from the Red Cross.

April has a home in Leilani Estates which she evacuated due to toxic gases. As of June 18, 2018 her home was still standing.
